Prescription & Medication Drop-off Locations

Medications can wreak havoc on our environment and water ways if improperly disposed. The Johnson County Recycling District, working with local law enforcement agencies, has established several convenient drop-off locations for your old or expired prescription medications, over the counter medications, and pharmaceuticals. Simply drop your pills, ointments, tablets, capsules, etc. in their original containers into specially marked drop boxes at the following medication recycling locations (no questions asked):

  • Johnson County Jail lobby – 1091 Hospital Rd., Franklin, Open 24 hours a day
  • Franklin Police Department lobby  2801 N. Morton Street (US 31), Franklin; 8:00am – 4:00pm, Monday – Friday (Closed on city-recognized holidays)
  • Edinburgh Police Department lobby – 200 S. Main St., Edinburgh
  • Greenwood Justice Center lobby – 186 Surina Way, Greenwood, 8:00am – 5:00pm, Monday – Friday (Closed on city-recognized holidays)
  • Whiteland Town Hall entrance  549 Main St., Whiteland; 8:00am – 5:00pm, Monday – Friday (Closed on town recognized holidays)

IMPORTANT: Sharps and needles are not accepted at the locations listed above.  However, sharps can be taken in closed metal or heavy plastic containers to the Johnson County Health Department, 460 North Morton Street, Suite A, Franklin, Phone: 317-346-4365

Inhalers cannot be put in the medication drop boxes because they are compressed air cylinders. Unfortunately, these items have to be disposed of in the trash after being emptied.
